Chess lessons in Melbourne: common questions

Who are your chess lessons for?

Kids and adults at every level: complete beginners learning their first moves, improving players rated around 1000 to 1800, and competitive juniors preparing for state and Australian championships.

Where do chess lessons take place?

In person at my home in Melbourne’s inner east, an easy trip for families from Box Hill, Balwyn, Camberwell, Kew, Doncaster and Glen Waverley (I’ll share the address when you book). Or online over video with a shared board on Lichess or Chess.com, which works for students anywhere in Australia.

Do you teach young children and complete beginners?

Yes. I played my first tournaments at seven, so I know what it takes to go from learning the rules to a first rated game. Lessons build good habits early and keep chess fun.

Do you teach children with ADHD, autism or other learning differences?

Yes. I’ve taught children with ADHD, autism (including Asperger’s) and other learning differences, and I shape each lesson around the student: clear structure and routines, shorter and more varied activities, plenty of hands-on play at the board, and a calm, patient pace. Chess can be a wonderful way to build focus and confidence. When you get in touch, tell me a little about your child and we’ll work out what suits them best.

Can you help my child prepare for chess tournaments?

Yes. Many of my students play in tournaments regularly, from local junior events to state and national championships, and they’ve achieved great results along the way. For students who are new to competition, I run lessons designed specifically to introduce tournament play: the rules, touch-move, using a chess clock, writing down moves, and what to expect on the day. For more experienced players, we prepare openings, look at opponents’ games, and work on managing nerves and the clock.

How much do chess lessons cost?
